Dermabrasion in Miami / Boynton Beach – Lee A. Gibstein, MD

Dermabrasion is a minimally invasive aesthetic procedure that stimulates the growth of new skin cells, evens out the skin tone and restores youthful radiance to the face. As a leading Miami dermabrasion provider, Dr. Gibstein has performed this procedure on numerous female and male patients. If you have been wondering whether dermabrasion could improve your complexion, read on.

Dermabrasion Candidacy

Dr. Lee Gibstein performs dermabrasion for adult patients who are in good health and have realistic expectations. He uses dermabrasion both as a highly effective stand-alone treatment and to improve the results of other, more invasive aesthetic treatments. Procedures that can be combined with dermabrasion include facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery and Botox, although these procedures are performed during separate surgical sessions.

As a premier plastic surgeon Miami patients consult regarding their facial rejuvenation needs, Dr. Gibstein recognizes that the best results are achieved through individualized treatments. He works diligently to customize each dermabrasion procedure to reflect the needs, concerns and preferences of each patient.

Dermabrasion: Important Considerations

Dermabrasion is an excellent facial rejuvenation option for patients who desire to refresh their looks but do not want to undergo surgery. Dermabrasion can reduce fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, freckles and age spots and even out the skin tone. It can also be used for tattoo removal.

However, prospective Miami dermabrasion patients should recognize not only the benefits but also the limitations of this procedure. Thus, dermabrasion cannot remove deep wrinkles, fill out hollow areas of the face or lift saggy skin. More comprehensive procedures are typically needed to address these aesthetic concerns.

Dermabrasion patients should also keep in mind that it is very important to avoid sun exposure after their treatments. This is because the newly exposed skin tissues are extremely sensitive to sunlight. Excessive exposure might damage the sensitive tissues, causing permanent discoloration. Prior to performing your procedure, Dr. Gibstein will carefully explain exactly what you should and should not do after your dermabrasion treatment, including how long you should avoid sun exposure.

Dermabrasion Procedure and Recovery

Each dermabrasion treatment typically requires from 15 minutes to two hours to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. To perform the procedure, Dr. Gibstein first applies an anesthetic agent, then abrades the facial skin with a wire brush or a burr containing diamond particles attached to a motorized handle. The depth of the treatment depends on the severity of acne scars or other blemishes being treated.

Following the procedure, Dr. Gibstein will cover your face with antibiotic ointment or burn cream as well as dressings. Your recovery time will depend on the depth of treatment. To minimize discomfort, Dr. Gibstein may suggest applying cold packs, ice packs or vinegar soaks to your face during the first 48 hours following the procedure. Pain medications will also help ease your discomfort as your skin heals from the treatment.

Patients should expect swelling and crusting of the skin following the treatment. Redness of the skin is also to be expected, but this will fade within four weeks, replaced by a smoother, more radiant complexion. Using sun block and avoiding sun exposure are crucial to ensuring a smooth recovery and optimal results.

A non-invasive treatment called microdermabrasion is available for patients who require less extensive skin rejuvenation. To perform this procedure, Dr. Gibstein employs a wand that uses tiny crystals or minerals to mechanically clean the skin. The old skin cells are dislodged and swept away, and fresh skin cells are revealed. Like dermabrasion, microdermabrasion stimulates the growth of new, healthy skin cells. However, microdermabrasion requires less recovery time than dermabrasion.
